2 Dallas firefighters injured battling blaze at site of former Valley View Center

Two Dallas firefighters were injured Thursday morning battling a fire at the beleaguered site of the former Valley View Center in Far North Dallas.

Dallas firefighters responded to the old mall, which occupies 30 acres at the corner of LBJ Freeway and Preston Road, shortly after 4:30 a.m. They encountered “heavy smoke and fire conditions,” Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said.

A group of firefighters became trapped by the fire, Evans said, but were quickly rescued. Two suffered injuries; one was burned, while another sustained what Evans described as an “injury of the musculoskeletal variety.”

Both firefighters were taken to a hospital. Neither injury was considered to be life-threatening, Evans said. Firefighters were still working at the site as of 9 a.m.

Thursday’s fire comes just over a month after several other fires at the site prompted the response of dozens of Dallas firefighters. In late February, the city designated the old mall as a habitual criminal property.
