Dallas will see relief from the rain Thursday, ‘fantastic fall weekend,’ forecast says

Sunshine returns to Dallas-Fort Worth Thursday, after overnight storms dumped rain on North Texas.

The chance of showers Thursday morning greatly diminished as storms moved eastward ahead of schedule. There’s still a 20% chance of rain by 10 a.m., but by noon, skies should clear up, the forecast says.

Temperatures will climb from early morning lows in the 60s to midday highs in the 80s Thursday before a cold front rolls across the area bringing a cool, dry and breezy start to the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

“Looks like a fantastic fall weekend to be outside,” KXAS-TV (NBC5) meteorologist Grant Johnston said.

Rainfall totals from showers Wednesday evening and overnight Thursday measured 2 to 4 inches to the north and northwest of Dallas and 1 to 3 inches south of the city. Thunder and lighting accompanied the heavy rainfall.

While a flood watch was issued Wednesday for most North Texas counties, significant flooding happened far south of Dallas. San Antonio saw moderate flooding, and more storms are likely to hit there Thursday.

Flash flood warnings remain in effect for many southeastern counties, as remnants from Topical Storm Pamela — which was downgraded from a hurricane — head for Texas and Oklahoma. The storm made landfall in Mexico on Wednesday, and forecasters warned it may drop 3 to 6 inches of rain across the two states.

More rainfall might round out October for much of the state, according to long-range forecasts by the weather service’s Climate Prediction Center. Above normal precipitation is possible in the latter half of the month, the forecast says.

The rain, however, may have helped hold off drought conditions for the rest of the season. North Texas had been experiencing a “dry period,” and the region running at about 25% to 30% of normal precipitation since Sept. 1.

Here’s what NBC5′s latest forecast says:

Thursday: 83/65, showers ending in the morning followed by decreasing clouds.

Friday: 75/51, turning windy and less humid with a mix of clouds and sunshine.

Saturday: 73/48, sunny and very nice.

Sunday: 75/49, sunny and cool.

Monday: 76/55, mostly sunny and pleasant.
