Girls Embracing Mothers (‘GEM’) is a Dallas-based non-profit supporting girls whose mothers are incarcerated. This past month, Life Investors Management Company’s new Chief Communications Officer, Janet Bernstein, shares her own story of growing up with a mom with a mental illness, moving homes and changing schools more than 17 times, yet overcame poverty to become a 9-time published author and national speaker… all without a college degree.
Although talking about her mom and the tumultuous childhood she endured, Janet has a heart for children who may be facing challenging circumstances such as poverty, substance abuse, loss of a parent, and mental illness.
Janet’s message “Always Remember to Shine” was featured as part of a mentoring workshop called “Dream it, Be It,” sponsored by Soroptimist International of Dallas. The girls of GEM took notes and interjected ideas of how to find joy in the tough moments. One of the favorite strategies was called “Investigate,” which empowered each girl to search within for the words to describe themselves in amazing ways, to serve as a reminder when needed. One incredible young lady enthusiastically announced, “I am STRONG!!” as her friends cheered in agreement.
After rising to overcome poverty, Janet’s mission is to remind people that their circumstances do not have to define their journey. She is passionate about educating people, and especially women, on strategies to create wealth and build a legacy, which is her focus at Life Investors Management Company. She proudly serves investors seeking alternative investment opportunities using life settlements.
