Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports that the transfer of Lionel Messi from Barcelona to PSG was ‘sad’ to see from the perspective of the La Liga giants.

But the Spanish coach made it clear that Messi will bring ‘excitement’ and ‘joy’ to his new club in Paris.

Jack Grealish can move for £100 million or Arsenal can shock the world and break their transfer record before deadline day, but no deal this summer will top that of Messi’s.

The 34-year-old, who grew up in and around the same area as Arteta in Catalonia, will now line up alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in a formidable forward line next season.

This is what Arteta had to say about the little magician leaving Barcelona:

“For me, he has been the best ever player on the planet,” said Arteta. “He was raised in Barcelona in a similar part of where I was raised.

“To let him go the way he has, it’s sad. But it tells you that there is no club exempt from this financial crisis. And as sad as it is, they probably had to be in a position to do it, to save the club.

On what he will bring to PSG: “Excitement and attention. Straightaway, you could see in Paris. How excited they are. The team they are building, it’s incredible, so it will be a joy to watch to see how they play.”

Wherever French football was on the European and world stage, well is has just sky-rocketed to heights never seen before.

But it is a sad state of affairs that these mega-rich clubs are throwing money at the game so much and completely crushing the competition.

Manchester City are the PSG version of English football and after their £100 million purchase of Grealish, it seems as though they are now after Harry Kane.

It’s not like they didn’t win the Premier League title or reach the European Cup final last season, but that’s where football is at.
