A man is accused of tackling a police officer Friday night in Uptown Dallas and causing her gun to fire after fleeing the scene of an accident and trying to break into homes.
Dallas police responded to the 4200 block of Buena Vista Street about 8:50 p.m. after receiving multiple reports that a man was attempting to enter homes.
Officers attempted to take the man into custody, police said, but he resisted and ran away. Officers used a Taser against the man, which police said was “ineffective.”
Police said the man then turned to chase one of the officers, who drew her firearm. The man tackled her and, in the ensuing struggle, grabbed the officer’s hand and gun. Her weapon “discharged,” police said.
No one was struck by gunfire, and the man was taken into custody.
Police did not refer to the incident as an officer-involved shooting.
The officer, whom police did not identify, was taken to a hospital and released. Police did not say whether she remained on active duty.
The man, identified as Roderick Green, also was taken to a hospital and was booked into the Dallas County jail early Saturday on charges of assault on a public servant, attempting to take a peace officer’s weapon and burglary. Police said Green is 32, but jail records and public records list his age as 33.
His bail had not been set Saturday morning, and it was not immediately whether he had an attorney.
Authorities said they later determined Green fled the scene of a major accident earlier Friday evening in the Knox-Henderson area, about a mile east of where he was arrested.
About 7:20 p.m., officers responded to the 2400 block of North Henderson Avenue, where a car traveling north on Belmont Avenue had turned right, veered off the road and hit a restaurant’s patio wall. Police said no injuries were reported.
It was unclear whether Green faced any charges in connection with that incident.
