Pushed by Mac Jones, Cam Newton steps forward for Patriots in Philadelphia – The Athletic

PHILADELPHIA — Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels got just about everything they needed out of their quarterbacks during their week here.

After leveling off for an extended stretch this month, Cam Newton rebounded during the two joint practices, and he was a solid again Thursday during the 35-0 preseason victory against the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field. Newton was 8 of 9 for 103 yards and a touchdown, and the Patriots scored on two of his three series against a mixture of starters and backups.

This week likely solidified Newton’s spot as the starting quarterback.

“Cam had a good week,” Belichick said. “But I thought everybody worked hard to take advantage of the opportunity that we had to go against a different group of players and different schemes.”

All the while, Mac Jones continued his ascension and proved capable of handling yet another new challenge with the higher-intensity joint workouts. The first-round pick was also 13 of 19 for 146 yards in the game, and the Patriots scored on three of his four possessions, largely against the hosts’ backup defense. Jones’ numbers could have been even better, as his six incompletions included three drops and a spike.

The Patriots have fast-tracked Jones’ development to get him ready whenever he’s needed. Whether that happens this season or next, the rookie has shown promise and progress on a weekly basis this summer.

“I’ve been around Mac long enough to know that’s not really a surprise.
