What $700,000 can buy you in the Dallas home market

When it comes to buying a home, you know that price is relative. These four Dallas homes — located across the city and listed at about the same price — offer a range of square footage, amenities and lifestyles. From the M streets and Winnetka Heights to North Dallas and the Highland Park area, see what $700,000 will buy in today’s market.

Charming Tudor

Neighborhood: M Streets

Square footage: 1,416

Price: $710,000

This 1924 Tudor has been modernized over the years but preserves its charm. “The original fireplace, hardwood floors and stained-glass window perfectly complement the wallpapered walls and expanded kitchen with marble countertops and stainless-steel appliances,” says listing agent Jordan Rosen with Compass DFW.

Spanning 1,416 square feet, the two-bedroom cottage comes with a bonus room that can be used as a breakfast nook or office, a moderate-size backyard with a deck and fence, and a sunroom. “The front sunroom, with its Carolina blue ceiling, brings instant happiness when you walk through the front door,” says Rosen. “It truly embodies the character of the M Streets that homeowners search for.”

The light-filled home also has a one-car garage, an updated primary bathroom and a large guest room with double closets.

Modern townhome

Neighborhood: Near Highland Park

Square footage: 1,977

Price: $675,000

Centrally located near Highland Park, Love Field and the Medical District, this single-family attached townhome features three bedrooms and 1,977 square feet. “The home sits on a corner lot, allowing for a lot of natural light,” says listing agent Jamie Ashby of Allie Beth Allman & Associates. “And it sits at the end of a quiet street.” The lot positioning allows for a sizable fenced backyard, rare for a single-family attached residence.

On the first floor, a guest room doubles as an office and offers a private door to the backyard. Heading up to the second floor, there’s an open-concept kitchen/family/dining area that is perfect for entertaining. The third floor includes the primary retreat and bathroom featuring a soaking tub and dual closets with Elfa shelving.

Monthly HOA dues of $100 cover yard maintenance, two dog parks, a clubhouse and a swimming pool. “It makes for easy, low-maintenance living,” says Ashby.

Tree-shaded bungalow

Neighborhood: Winnetka Heights

Square footage: 1,940

Price: $690,000

With its adorable front porch and red brick exterior, this bungalow is a cozy find. The home was recently remodeled with its historic details in mind — think original wood floors, high ceilings, built-ins and a custom master closet. The kitchen was redone with quartz countertops, a Bertazzoni gas range and custom cabinets.

A rare detail for a house built in 1935 is the garage. “On top of that, the home has an awesome mother-in-law suite,” says listing agent Raul Ruiz with Allie Beth Allman & Associates. The one-bedroom, one-bathroom space above the detached garage has been beautifully remodeled.

The 1,940-square-foot, three-bedroom home is close to the Bishop Arts District, restaurants and the Kessler Theater.

Spacious remodel

Neighborhood: Prestonwood

Square footage: 2,673

Price: $699,000

Drive about 20 minutes north of Downtown Dallas and you’ll find this 2,673-square-foot home on more than a quarter-acre. Originally built in 1969, it is fully renovated, including interior and exterior paint, a new fence, and bamboo and tile flooring. A rear-facing garage and an attached carport offer three parking spaces.

The kitchen, featuring stainless appliances, looks out over an open living area with an electric fireplace and built-in cabinets. There are four bedrooms and three and a half baths; the primary bath has a frameless shower as well as a separate soaking tub. And the perks don’t stop inside. “The home sits in a corner lot, with a governor’s driveway and covered porch,” notes listing agent Kevin Le with Mercedes Realtors. “It’s conveniently located near restaurants, shopping and major freeways.”
